To John Baker   12 August 1890

12/8/90

Let me offer my best felicitation, dear Mr Baker, to your promotion, so well earned.1 Yours must be a very happy existence, all the more as you have a young talented son in the bot. Department of the British Museum,2 who can cooperate to some extent with you, and whom you can further guide in his career.

With regardful remembrance

your

Ferd. von Mueller.

John Baker was promoted from Principal Assistant to Keeper of the Herbarium and Library upon the resignation of Professor Daniel Oliver (Gardeners’ chronicle, ser. 3, vol. 7, p. 770, 21 June 1890).
