Geehrtester Herr Baron!

Die Sendung Meeresalgen-Material, die in diesen Tagen mir zukam, erinnert mich daran, Ihnen endlich einmal meinen verbindlichsten Dank auszusprechen für die verschiedenen Sendungen, die Sie mir seit meinem letzten Briefe haben zugehen lassen. In den beiden Algen-Sendungen, von Port Phillip und von der Armstrong-Bai, habe ich verschiedene Exemplare gefunden, die mir für meine Untersuchungen von Wichtigkeit sind, und die mir daher sehr willkommen waren. Vor allem aber habe ich Ihnen meinen besten Dank zu sagen für die Zusendung Ihres Syst. Census of Austral. Plants. Sind meine eigenen Studien zur Zeit auch nicht gerade speziell den Phanerogamen zugewandt, so hat doch das Buch mein Interesse in hohem Grade wach gerufen, so dass ich Ihnen aufs Beste danken muss für die freundliche Zusendung. Hoffentlich werden Sie recht bald dem ersten Theile die Kryptogamen nachfolgen lassen, von denen die Algen mich, wie Sie ja wissen, ganz besonders interessiren.

Dabei muss ich Ihnen dann ein Versehen bekennen, das mir bei der Aufstellung meiner Florideen-Übersicht begegnet ist. Ich hatte leider übersehen, dass eine Gattung Müllerella bereits unter den Flechten existirt. Meine Gattung Müllerella muss ich daher anders benennen. Da bin ich nun aber einigermassen in Verlegenheit wegen der Wahl des Namens. Der Name Müllera ist ja bereits vergeben (von Linné). Es bleibt mir daher nur noch die Namensform Mülleromia zur Wahl übrig, eine Namensform, von der ich nicht weiss, ob dieselbe Ihnen willkommen sein würde. In jedem Falle aber möchte ich hierdurch einmal bei Ihnen anfragen, wieweit Ihnen diese Form Mülleromia genehm ist, eventuell aber Sie freundlichst bitten, mir eine andere Namensform vorzuschlagen, welche die Gattung als Ihnen gewidmet kenntlich macht.

Meine ausführlichere Florideen-Arbeit ist in diesem Jahre bisher nur sehr langsam vorwärts gerückt. Seit dem leichten Influenza-Anfall, den ich Ende des Jahres 1889 durchmachte, kränkele ich fast ununterbrochen, bald an diesem, bald an jenem Übel. Auch jetzt bin ich noch immer Patient und darf noch nicht wieder an eine volle Arbeitsthätigkeit denken.

Hoffentlich darf ich annehmen, dass Sie bisher von dieser allverbreiteten Influenza verschont geblieben sind. — Mit grösstem Interesse habe ich Kenntnis erhalten von Ihrem jüngst hier eingetroffenen Bilde, dass mir Herr Garteninspektor Dr Goeze gestern vorzeigte.

The consignment of marine algal material that arrived recently reminds me again to express my most obliging thanks to you for the various consignments that you have forwarded to me since my last letter. In both the algal consignments from Port Phillip and from Armstrong Bay³ I have found various specimens that are of importance to me for my researches and which were therefore very welcome. However, above all I have to give you my best thanks for sending your Systematic Census of Australian plants.⁴ Even if my own studies at present are not just especially devoted to the Phanerogams, the book has awakened my interest to a high degree, so that I must thank you very much for so kindly sending it. It is to be hoped you will be able to send the first part of the Cryptogams very soon,⁵ of which the algae, as you know, interest me quite particularly.

At the same time I must confess a mistake to you, that has happened to me in the drawing up of my Floridaceae overview. Unfortunately I had overlooked that a genus Muellerella already exists among the lichens. I must therefore rename my genus Muellerella. Even so, I am now to some extent embarrassed on account of the choice of the name. The name Muellera is, you see, already taken (by Linné). Therefore the form of the name Muelleromia probably only remains as a choice for me, a form of name that I do not know would be welcome to you. However, in that case I would first like to ask you to what extent this form Muelleromia is acceptable to you, or ask you most kindly to suggest another form of the name to me, which would make the genus recognisably dedicated to you.⁶

My detailed Floridaceae work in this year has hitherto moved only very slowly forwards. Since the slight influenza attack that I experienced at the end of 1889, I have been unwell almost constantly, sometimes from this, sometimes from that illness. Even now I am still a patient and cannot yet think of a full working activity.

I hope I may assume that you have hitherto been spared from this universally distributed influenza. — I was informed with the greatest interest about your portrait that recently arrived here, that Garden Inspector Dr Goeze showed me yesterday.
