From Ferdinand von Mueller to the Mildura Cultivator   [Sep 1890]

[ (Anabasis Ammodendron).

Baron von Mueller has forwarded a packet of the seed of this plant with a view to its being tried in the Mildura district.1 Its natural habitat ranges from the Ural to Persia and Turkestan. It is the only arborescent plant in the drift sand deserts of those regions, and has been strongly recommended for naturalisation in other sandy or saline arid tracts. It is of the family of the Chenopads [i.e. Chenopods], or spinach, and attains a height of 20 feet. It endures a soil temperature of half the heat of boiling water, and in appearance resembles somewhat our lignum scrub. The young growths are tender and nutritious for stock, but the matured wood is hard and dense.]
