From Ferdinand von Mueller to the Colac Shire Council   [Dec 1890]

[From Baron von Mueller, stating that he had received a specimen of a thistle from the Colac Shire Council, but no letter in reference to it.1 The specimen is called carduus pyenooephalus;2 it is a native of Britain and some other European countries, but one of the least common species. As it only once flowers from the same root it can be annihilated its seeding by early cutting and then buring3 at once what is cut.]

Carduus pyenocephalus

For background to the request to M, see under 'Thistles' in the report of the meeting of the Colac Shire Council held on 3 December 1890, in Colac herald, 5 December 1890. p. 3, where some thought it was the 'Star' thistle, although the Inspector had doubts. 'Star thistle' is not among common names reported for C. pycnocephalus in APNI (accessed 28 August 2025).
