From Ferdinand von Mueller to Maurice Holtze   8 Feb 1891

8/2/91

Immer Ihr

Ferd. von Mueller.

Today in the quiet of Sunday, dear Mr Holtze, I have carefully examined your Brassaia No. 12692 and find it is identical with the East Australian B. actinophylla. Although it is true it is not a new species, yet the discovery remains important for phytogeography, for it indicates that other jungle plants may be found there in the far N. W. that until now we have known only from East Australia.

Does Utricularia albiflora always have a white corolla? Does it grow among U. capilliflora?3 Is it possible to obtain ripe fruiting specimens of the rush No. 1190?4 Without them it will not be possible to allocate to this plant its correct position in the system. You were so kind to send me the young fruit of Sterculia holtzei, which brings us a step further in the description of this species. The fruit was certainly not ripe at the time. Should you get once more to the place of discovery, you could perhaps look out for ripe fruit. It is important with Sterculia to examine the embryo in regard to its position.

No. 1225 is Gardenia suffruticosa R. Br. This species had not been found again, since R. Brown was there.5 Of course, I mention future requirements only, so that you or your clever young son are able to procure what is required as the occasion offers. It is, after all, in your own scientific interest.

Always yours

Ferd. von Mueller.

In M to M. Holtze, 1891(in this edition as 91-00-00d), M stated that he would consider the Brassaia more carefully.

M had been trying for some time to confirm the identity of specimens he had tentatively determined as Utricularia albiflora; see, for example, M to M. Holtze, 19 October 1890.

In an undated list, M to M. Holtze, 1891 (in this edition as 91-00-00d), he identified the specimen with this number as Gahnia or Cladium. No Holtze specimen with collecting number 1190 is indexed for MEL (AVH, accessed 3 August 2022).

Bentham (1863-78), vol. 3, p. 410, described this species from a Brown specimen collected in the Gulf of Carpentaria, which Investigator surveyed between November 1802 and February 1803; see R. Brown (2001), pp. 301-64. Brown does not mention collecting a Gardenia from this area.
