Dear Sir,
The long-leaved Acacia, of which you sent specimens from Hergot's Springs1 on the 18th Febr.,2 is A. stenophylla of Cunningham. The Casuarinas of the series, to which C. glauca is the type need reexamination with critical care from the larger material, accumulated since the publication of the 6th vol. of the Flora.3 Let this stand over til I am through all arrear-work from my N.Z. tour.4 I may mention however at once, that it is this Casuarina, to which I gave 1849 the name C. moesta,5 which appeared in various earlier prints.
Regardfully
your
Ferd. von Mueller

See W. Gill to M, 18 February 1891.
Bentham (1863-78), vol. 6, pp. 192-202.
M went to Christchurch, NZ, in January 1891 to attend the third Congress of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science.
Miquel (1856), p. 98 quotes M as the author of the name. M does not list the species in either B83.03.04 or B89.05.03, or in his treatment of Casuarinaceae in B67.07.05, pp. 16-20. Bentham (1863-78), vol. 6, p. 197 treats it as a synonym of the earlier C. suberosa. The name appears on labels of specimens collected by M, for example MEL 545812 (undated).
