Die reiche Samen-Sendung, edler Freund, welche Ihre PostKarte ankündigte, ist angelangt, und spreche ich Ihnen für diesen neuen Beweis Ihrer Grossmuth meinen besten Dank aus. Es ist eine mühevolle Arbeit, eine solche Collection herzustellen, u. es ist um so mehr gütig, diese mir zukommen zu lassen, da ich Ihnen in letzterer Zeit so wenig gesandt habe. Seit Jahren habe ich keinen Sammler mehr im Felde, so dass es für mich schwierig ist, den Austausch zu unterhalten, so weit wie ich es möchte.
Sie haben auch nicht viel Litterarisches in letzterer Zeit von mir erhalten, was zum Theil von Neben-Arbeiten für die Geographie herkommt; so hat das Zustandebringen der neuen Central-australischen Expedition viel Mühe verursacht, u so ist es mit der Nordenskiöld antarctischen Fahrt für welche jetzt die Mittel grossentheils gesichert sind. Dass Sie die vielseitigen Arbeiten am Lebens-Abend beschwerlich finden, wundert mich nicht, denn ich fühle nun auch "die Fülle der Jahre", obwohl ich jünger bin wie Sie. Was mich aber wundert ist die riesige Masse von Arbeit, welche Sie noch alljährlich überwinden.

So ist dann plötzlich auch der prächtige Maximowicz dahin geschieden! Wir sind noch unter den wenigen Superstitis der alten Zeit!

The rich seed collection, noble friend, announced by your postcard,1 has arrived, and I give you my sincerest thanks for this new proof of your generosity. It is a laborious job to bring together such a collection, and it is all the more kind to send it to me, as I have sent so little in recent times. I have not had a collector in the field now for years, so that it is difficult for me to maintain the exchange to the extent I would like to.
You have not received many publications from me either over recent times, which is partly due to the additional work for geography. Thus it has cost a lot of exertion to bring about the Central-Australian expedition,2 and the same applies to Nordenskiöld's Antarctic expedition, for which the means are now largely secured.3 I am not surprised that you find the manifold tasks difficult in the evening of your life, for I, too, now feel "the fullness of years", even though I am younger than you. But what does surprise me is the enormous amount of work that you still conquer annually.

So the splendid Maximowicz has also suddenly passed away!4 We still are among the few survivors from the old days!
