M has given Sutherland's second name incorrectly; it was ‘Hubert’; see notice of his being appointed a licensed surveyor, New South Wales Government Gazette, 29 January 1873, p. 269.
The nomination was forwarded by William Woolls to the Linnean Society in a letter of 5 June 1891 in which he identified Sutherland as living at Bathurst and said that he ‘is connected with one of our most respected medical practitioners’. Sutherland was the step-son of W. F. Bassett.
