From Ferdinand von Mueller to Alfred Howitt   19 July 1891

19/7/91.

In the quietness of the Sunday, dear Mr Howitt, I have written a contribution to Mr Stirling's Report on the resources of the Australian Alps,1 and have just sent it to him.2 May I suggest, that you introduce this document by a memorandum from your own long experiences to the hon the Minister of Mines.3

Regardfully your

Ferd. von Mueller.

My time for some months has been much extra taxed by seeing the 8th edition of the "Select plants",4 again enlarged, through the press.

To these Reports should still be added an approximate calculation of the areal extent of the Australian Alps.

See M to J. Stirling, 19 July 1891 (in this edition as 91-07-19b).

On 10 August 1891, Howitt as Acting Secretary for Mines forwarded Stirling's report, 'Notes on the climate and soil of the Australian Alps with reference to the suitability of the higher altitudes for rural settlements, with addenda by Baron Von Mueller', to the Secretary for Lands. He prefaced the report with a note of his own declaring that from his own experience of the Alpine Districts over thirty years, ‘I feel no doubt as to there being scope for very considerable settlement in some of the directions indicated by Mr Stirling and Baron v. Mueller'.
