From James Thomson to Ferdinand von Mueller   25 July 1891

Brisbane, 25.7.91

Dear Baron von Mueller,

The commissions conveyed by your interesting communication of the 13th. inst,1 have been attended to. I was about to communicate with the Brisbane Branch of the Australian Natives Association, as desired, but, that before actually entering into action I saw its Secretary who stated that you had already done so. Being assured by him that steps would be taken to deal with the subject officially I considered that a communication from me was unnecessary. I trust the appeal will meet with hearty support.2

Should you, however, desire me to aid the cause in any way a command will meet with my most hearty response.

With kind greetings

I am,

dear Baron von Mueller,

Very faithfully yours

J. P. Thomson

Baron Sir F. von Mueller,

K.C.M.G., F.R.S., etc

Melbourne

Funding was being sought for the proposed Swedish-Australian exploring expedition to Antarctica. The report of the Annual Conference of the Australian Natives' Association held in South Brisbane on 27 February (Brisbane courier, 1 March 1891, p. 54, col. a) indicates that a letter from M concerning 'the proposed antarctic expedition' had been received and replied to, but no other indication of the contents is given; letters not found. In M to J. Mann, 30 July 1891, and M to J. Leibius, 10 June 1891, M suggested that one shilling be sought from each member of the Association.
