From Ferdinand von Mueller to James Keys   16 Feb 1892

16/2/92.

In my "struggle for existence," dear Mr Keys, my correspondence got into arrear, and I have not yet thanked you for the kind sending of fruiting Aldrovanda. You could add to the obligation, if you at this autumn could secure still some more specimens in well ripened fruit of this rare plant. Among what you sent is adhering Lemna oligorrhiza, one of the 6 Australian species of minute "Water-lentils". As three of these have hitherto only be recorded from QL,1 and as probably all six occur there, you might easily discover more as new for your colony.

Have you any facility to get me seeds, in some quantity well ripened, of the best saltbushes in your vicinity through children on stations in saltbush-country? I would willingly spend some little money for such gatherings. Indeed I like notes also on the respective value of these pasture-fodders near you, indeed of any other herbage also, for the next edition of the "Select plants".2

Some Lemnas are restricted to somewhat brackish water.

Always regardfully your

Ferd. von Mueller.
