From Ferdinand von Mueller to Walter Gill   12 Oct 1892

12/10/92

The Casuarina Decaisneana would be the most valuable to you for planting in any sandy soil in the interior,1 dear Mr Gill; it occurs about the Macdonell Ranges2 on Sand hills.

Do you like to join the great Royal Hortic. Soc. of England, as F.R.H.S.? I will gladly propose you; it costs only £2 - a year for which you get the publications.3

Regardfully your

Ferd. von Mueller.

In M to W. Gill, 5 August 1891, M had already congratulated Gill on his election as FRHS. Nineteenth-century nomination certificates to the Society no longer exist and it cannot be confirmed that M was the proposer.

MS is accompanied by an envelope: 'On Her Majesty's Service | Walt. Gill Esqr FLS., Conservator of forests &c Adelaide | Government Botanist, Melbourne, 13/10 1892'. The front bears the frank stamp and crest of the 'CHIEF SECRETARY VICTORIA' and a postal stamp 'MELBOURNE OCT 14 92'. The back bears the postal stamp: 'G.P.O. ADELAIDE S.A. OCT 15 92'.
