From John Bufton   22 December 1892

Port Arthur, Tas.

Dec. 22, 1892

My Dear Sir Ferdinand,

I cannot let this Season pass without wishing you a Merry Christmas &c. and also thanking you for much kindness during the year.

I hope shortly to make an effort with regard to Port Davey and, though it will probably cost me five pounds, you can best reward me by proposing me for the F.L.S. which I am desirous of obtaining. I should be disposed to pay the whole life subscription (about £50 I believe) at once to save the trouble1 of annual remittance. I know of Fellows who have done far less than I — however little I have done. But you will, of course, follow your own judgement. I fully intend working diligently for the advancement of Australasian Botany while I have time and strength. Though I am only 35 my life is not likely to be a long one, as I am quite an invalid.

Very respectfully & sincerely yours

John Bufton

Baron Sir F. von Mueller

K.C.M.G., FL.S. F.R.S. &c &c2

I should … trouble is underlined, presumably by the Secretary of the Linnean Society.
