[An item of intelligence comes to hand from Hobart which is worthy of the fullest consideration from every dweller on the North-West Coast of the island. Mr Thomas Lewis, of that city, has procured from Baron Von Mueller the eminent botanist of Victoria, a large quantity of maram grass roots for distribution in Tasmania.1]
It is likely that M did not himself supply the marram grass roots, but passed the request to the Port Fairy (Vic) council; see notes to M to Editor, Port Fairy Gazette, 22 July 1893. It is not known how long such orders took to be fulfilled, and thus to estimate when Lewis applied to M, but it is assumed to have been in 1893. See Heathcote and Maroske (1896), especially table 1, for the extent of the trade in the roots.
