From Ferdinand von Mueller to Otto Tepper   [Mar 1893]

Fitzgerald hatte Chiloglottis Gunnii nach der Farbe in 2 Arten gespalten u sogar als 2 Species abgebildet. Er hat aber selbst öffentlich seine zweite Art nachher eingezogen.

Fitzgerald had split Chiloglottis gunnii into 2 species according to the colour and even figured it as 2 species. He has, however, himself publicly afterwards withdrawn his second species.1

Chiloglottis gunnii

Fitzgerald distinguished Chiloglottis gunnii and C. muelleri in R. Fitzgerald (1875-94), vol. 2, part 2, plate [6] (i.e. in 1885). No publication by Fitzgerald in which he withdrew C. muelleri as a distinct species has been found. M did not list it in B89.12.03 but this does not mean it was withdrawn by then since M was quite scathing about Fitzgerald's nomenclature; see, for example, M to R. Tate, September 1882 (in this edition as 82-09-00b). In B89.12.03, M included only 15 of the more than 80 orchid names (excluding varieties and orthographic variants) that Fitzgerald created up to 1888.

MS annotation by Tepper: '25.3.93?'. This may be an inferred date of composition, or perhaps a recollected date of receipt.
