29/3/93.
Am not surprised, dear Mr Fletcher, that you must limit the M'Leay's Memorial Volume1 more than was intended. The depression in these Colonies affects also science, and I have not even been able to contribute to the fund for this volume.
As I pointed out to your worthy President some months ago,2 I had to reduce even my private book-expenses much and other former liabilities for science purposes, as my income was already heavily taxed by my multifarious science connections and the reductions in the Department render my work still more difficult. The statistic notes on Australian plants3 I have now received back. They serve well for the litterary organ of the new international Academy for the geography of plants, founded in Le Mans, and of which I have been elected President.4
Always glad to cooperate with the L.S. of N.SW. and with friendly greeting
your
Ferd von Mueller
Do you like me to propose you for FLS. of London?5
