From Ferdinand von Mueller to Friedrich Krichauff   15 Apr 1893

15/4/93.

Du bist ja mein einziger Dutzbruder in Australien!

Stets freundschaftlich

der Deine

Your letter1 has made me infinitely sad, dear Krichauff, for it recalls memories of long-gone days filled with hope! I can see your now lamented sister2 in my mind, standing before me, smiling, as she watched me collect Corydalis digitata, Tulipa silvestris, and other rarities in the meadows of the castle garden near Husum. Her young children were the most beautiful in town! Everybody was delighted by their appearance. — Everyone will retain wonderful memories of this noble lady!

You, as a much younger member of your family, will surely be preserved to us for a long time yet, for the Lower House3 and also for the benefit of your colony. After all, you come from a family with longevity! — you probably have no longer any relatives left in Husum.

I will certainly spend some time during my visit in Adelaide with you and your worthy old father-in-law,4 and your wife, and your splendid sons.5 After all, you are my only 'Dutzbruder'6 in Australia!

Yours in constant friendship

Ferd. von Mueller.

M was planning to attend the meeting of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science in Adelaide in September 1893. However, he became ill and had to call off the visit at the last moment; see M to O. Tepper, 1 October 1893.

In German only family members and close personal friends are addressed with the familiar 'Du'; the verb is 'dutzen' = to address someone with 'Du'. The more formal and general form of address is 'Sie'.
