From Ferdinand von Mueller to Jean Müller   18 Apr 1893

18/4/93.

Stets Sie ehrend

Flechten. Vielleicht können Sie ihm einige überzählige Exemplare ablassen

I think I have not yet consulted you, highly esteemed friend, as I long ago wished in reference to your views on the inclusion of the Monochlamydeae. Because the 3rd Census must soon be published, I would be very grateful to you if you would indicate to me briefly the positions in which you would put every family of Monochlamydeae among the remaining orders of the Dicotyledoneae, except the Coniferae & Cycadeae which I retain as the sole remaining of the Monochlamydeae and do not place next to the Filices. You do know the 2nd Census of Australian plants in which I have developed my views in reference to the systematic sequence of the orders from the Australian standpoint. Your views from other experiences may yet give me many good suggestions.1

Can I send you seeds for the botanical garden or does it no longer stand under your direction? The botanical circumstances of Geneva are not very clear to me.

Could you kindly indicate to me the reference in which Brogniart2 removed the Monochlamydeae?3 I did it before Grisebach.

Always respecting you

Ferd von Mueller.

Do you recall all systematists who no longer accept the Monochl.

The excellent Dr Minks wrote me a fine letter recently.4 He wants correctly named Australian lichens. Perhaps you could let him have some surplus specimens.

Coniferae

Cycadeae

Dicotyledoneae

Filices

Monochlamydeae

The planned third edition was not published.

i.e. Brongniart.

Where Brongniart 'removed' the group has not been found, but Brongniart (1868), chapter 1, discusses the general point. However, in M to J. Hooker, 8 September 1873 (in this edition as 73-09-08b), M pointed out problems with Brongniart's position. See also Maroske (2006) and Stevens (1994), especially chapters 4 and 5.
