This time, noble friend, I am just writing to ascertain whether the alpine lichens (from Mt Erika1) that I sent you at the beginning of this year have proved to be remarkable. I arranged for both my assistants to climb this mountain (topped with snow five months of the year), foreseeing that no new vascular plants would show up so that the interest is connected to the evasculars.
I am thinking you will kindly write out for me how you would divide the Monochlamydeae. I have put the Sarraceniaceae together with Saxifrageae, Nepenthaceae and Droseraceae. The seed of Darlington.2 even down to its large embryo, is quite like that in Nepenthes.
I will send you the printing of my speech that I gave at the commemoration of Alphonse de Candolle before our Field Naturalists' Club two weeks ago as its patron.3 A touching last letter from the great deceased came to me, dated from the middle of March,4 after almost 40 years of correspondence.
Respectfully your
Ferd. von Mueller
I now place the Stackhousiaceae (minus Macgregoria, which stands near the Geraniaceae (Floerkea according to Baillon) near Halorageae.5
