In my letter of yesterday3 I forgot to mention, that the larger plant, taken in the “Australian” for Kew by Mr and Mrs Markes may possibly not be a Verticordia, but perhaps a Melaleuca; the smaller however must be either V. oculata or V. grandis; this smaller one however is in so feeble a state, that it may perish on the way.4 Like in some other myrtaceous plants, the oildots in the leaves of the larger plant are few; still they are there and comparatively large and often only developed near the upper end of the leaves. But supposed, the large plant prove not a true Verticordia, when coming into flower, it will turn out likely new for Kew. I trust, you will have a friendly word for Mr & Mrs Markes.
With best greeting
Ferd von Mueller
I had just a very touching letter from Casimir D.C.5
Melaleuca
