From Ferdinand von Mueller to Nathaniel McKay   7 July 1893

[Through the thoughtfulness of Baron von Mueller, the editor of this journal has been enabled to distribute a few seeds of the cork oak (Quercus suber) among some of the experimenters in Mildura].1

Quercus suber

The article goes on to describe the appearance of the tree and the 50 years it takes to reach maturity 'so that those who are sowing the seeds in Mildura will not probably live to see the resulting trees—if trees do result— giving up their economic value.'

Letter not found. The text given here is from 'THE CORK OAK. Seeds Distributed in Mildura', Mildura cultivator, 15 July 1893, p. 5. The newspaper is a weekly, and on the assumption that the seeds would have been distributed as soon as they arrived and that they were received after the previous issue went to press, M's communication is dated to 7 July as the most likely earliest date that they would have been sent to be received and distributed before this issue.
