From Frederick Bailey   17 July 1893

July 17th [189]31

Dear Baron

I have a single fragmentary specimen of what may prove a new Rhodomyrtus but before publishing it as such would like to compare it with your R. cymiflora therefore would you kindly lend or give me a specimen for the purpose?2 I am the more anxious to work up these fragmentary materials that the supplementary volume to the Flora3 should be made as complete as possible —

Yours very truly

F. M. Bailey

Rhodomyrtus

editorial addition.
The specimens received by Bailey from M on 25 July 1893 may have been M’s response to this request (see 93-07-25b in this edition). No Rhodomyrtus species named by Bailey is listed in Bailey (1913), p. 207.
A reference to the proposed supplement to Bentham (1863-78) that M had promised to provide after Bailey proposed doing it himself, see F. Bailey to M, March 1893 (in this edition as 93-03-00a), and F. Bailey to M, 14 June 1893. The Gardener's chronicle, 5 August 1893, p. 160 reported the supplement as 'forthcoming' but it was not complete by the time of M's death. See also Clements (1998) and Lucas (2003), pp. 272–4.
