From Ferdinand von Mueller to Casimir de Candolle   29 Aug 1893

29/8/93.

Allow me, dear and honoured Sir, to send you a letter, received from Prof Goodale,1 the celebrated Prof and Director of the bot. Garden of Harvard-University, Boston, and two years ago the President of the American Assoc for Advancement of Science. I send this letter because Prof Goodale refers so touchingly to my eulogy of your lamented father.2 I hope the letter of condolence from the Boys Naturalists Association here to you3 was showing to you in their "eloge" in how wide esteem the memory of your parent is held. You have there even a Society also, which published its "Les feuilles des jeunes Naturalistes", a publication which comes also under my notice here. Although I am since 47 years a British Subject, I am in my tendencies a Cosmopolitan, and this reminds me that — to judge from name — your respected mother was of German origin!

Always regardfully your

Ferd. von Mueller

Since many years I had no longer means to keep a Collector in the field still through Amateurs I receive occasionally sufficient material, to distribute surplus specimens. I am willingly inclined to send now and then more to the D.C. herbarium, but it can be only small parcels by post. My publications you will have completely
