23/10/93.
Your letters and sendings are always most welcome, dear Mr Tyson, but the present communications are of particular interest. The one (38) new plant, of which you obtained now the fruits turnes out to be a Kochia. Information regarding some other of your new or rare plants you will obtain from a print, very soon to be issued.1
Your success with the Euchlaena pleases me greatly, as I introduced this grass also first into W.A. I feel sure you will be getting splendid results also from the "Wondergrass". In autumn kindly plant some in desert sand, where some little soakage exists, as I am eager to learn whether it will extend thence on its own accord into dry sand.
If you could send me a little sprig of any of those plants, on which your pasture-animals thrive best, and which they prefer to others, I could utilize these notes for the 9th edition on "Select plants for industrial culture",2 and your name would be mentioned in each instance Of course, in cases, where you have obtained already the names of the plants from me, it would be only necessary to mention the names.
Are you a relative of the rich Mess Tyson, the pastural Gentleman of the eastern colonies?3
With regardful remembrance your
Ferd von Mueller.
Hope to hear soon from you again.
Am particularly anxious to learn, on what sorts of Saltbushes the stock there most likes to feed on.
Euchlaena
Kochia
B93.11.05 consisted of a description of Hemigenia tysoni, collected by Tyson 'on hills near Mount Narryer'.
B95.08.04. Tyson is mentioned in a number of entries, e.g. under Andropogon sericeus, 'Proved one of the best pasture-grasses in North-Western Australia [Isaac Tyson]'; under Claytonia polyandra, 'This succulent perennial herb is much liked by all kinds of pasture-animals in sub-tropic Western Australia, and also consumed there by the aboriginals [Isaac Tyson]'.
