Root also required, to make out the specific name.
As regards Murray River plants, dear Miss Hussey, mainly floating or submerged weeds are needed. But that involves dangers on account of snakes; so the occasional gathering of them must be left to your young Gentlemen friends.9
With best greeting,

Xerotes
There is no Hussey specimen with this number in MEL.
C. melitensis?
It is not known whether this is another specimen of Xerotes dura numbered as '73' in M to J. Hussey, 1893 (in this edition as 93-00-00k) and listed in AVH under Lomandra multiflora subsp. dura, of which X. dura a synonym. There are two other unnumbered Hussey specimens at MEL, one dated 1893 and the other July 1894.
Number used twice; once in 1893 for Chrysocephalum apiculatum, a synonym for H. semipapposum, and in 1894 for the unrelated Amphibolis antarctica.
The number is used twice, each time for the alga Perithalia caudata, one with no date and the other dated 1895.
No. 50 also used for Verbascum in M to J. Hussey, 1893 (in this edition as 93-00-00k) with the comment 'Flowers and leaves also required'. Hussey evidently used the same number for the new specimen. However, '50' in the MEL collection is the unrelated Sclerochlamys brachyptera dated 1894 (MEL 101650).
There is a sheet with this species, record no. '38' (MEL 2239790) dated 1893. However, that number is not used in any extant determination list in the Hussey archive. There are also three sheets of this species without record numbers, dated 1893.
The typescript includes the comment that Hussey wrote 'Alga' alongside this name. There are three specimens, none an alga, numbered '87' in MEL, Maireana pyramidata and Sclerolaena brevifolia, each dated 1894, and an undated Silene gallica. In M to J. Hussey, October 1893 (in this edition as 93-10-00g), '87' is used for Silene gallica, which might be the undated MEL 1596147.
Paragraph published in Kraehenbuehl (1981a), p. 392, with different punctuation.
Item is a typescript, transcriber unknown, prepared ca. 1977 from an original MS in the State Library of South Australia, Adelaide.
All the numbers where the names match the MEL identification given for Hussey's specimens (AVH, accessed 4 August 2024), or are complete or pro parte synonyms (APC, accessed 16 August 2024), are dated to 1893. Although Hussey used the same number for different specimens, it is probable that this list follows M to J. Hussey, October 1893 (in this edition as 93-10-00g), where the highest number used was '163'. Lower numbers appear to be filling in gaps (154, 155, and 161 were not in 93-10-00g) or were used again by Hussey. The closest dated letter is M to J. Hussey, 19 November 1893. It mentions a Xerotes dura, 'just received'. Based on the sequence of numbers, supported by the assumption that the Xerotes comment applies to the unnumbered specimen dated 1893 now at MEL as MEL 630943, this list is dated to November as the earliest date it could have been written.
