From Ferdinand von Mueller to Jessie Hussey   19 Nov 1893

19/11/93.

Your present specimens came only 2 days after your last letter, dear Miss Hussey, so I can do the naming only now. The Xerotes, just received, is X. dura FvM. It is a comparatively rare species.

The information on the scent of Logania crassifolia interests me greatly for reasons, which you will soon [see] all explained in print1 Veronica distans would make a neat pot plant in European bot. Gardens. So ripe seeds would be welcome. Best thanks for the seeds of Logania crassifolia Strange to say, specimens of Frankenia with ripe2 seeds are wanting in my large collection of dried plants, which I commenced 1839, which fills two large halls, and which amounts to about one million sheets!

With regardful remembrance your

Ferd. von Mueller.

Nothing matching this description written by M has been found. He had asked in M to J. Hussey, October 1893 (in this edition as 93-10-00g) whether the flowers of Logania crassifolia were scented.

Kraehenbuehl has 'perfectly ripe'.

These two numbers were missing from the numbered series in M to J. Hussey, October 1893 (in this edition as 93-10-00g). There is no 144 in Hussey's collections at MEL (AVH, accessed 16 August 2024). There is an undated specimen of Epiglossum smithiae numbered '141', an alga, not a grass.

Item is a typescript, transcriber unknown, prepared ca. 1977 from an original MS in the State Library of South Australia, Adelaide.

Parts of the second paragraph were published in Kraehenbuehl (1981a), p. 392, with abbreviation spelled out, differences in wording and punctuation.
