From Ferdinand von Mueller to the Central Bureau of Agriculture of South Australia   [Dec 1893]

[Mr. G. H. Vickery, a member of the Meadows branch of the Agricultural Bureau, South Australia, has forwarded to the Adelaide office two sugar beets, Vilmorial1 Improved, raised from seed supplied by the Central Bureau, and presented by Baron Von Mueller. The root weighed about 11 lb., and the seed was sown in November last.]

Error for Vilmorin?

Letter not found. The text given here is from 'Agricultural notes', Leader (Melbourne), 19 October 1895,.p. 9. A similar report, without mentioning M as a source, was published in Advertiser (Adelaide), 5 October 1895, p. 5, col. d. The Bureau is known to have distributed seeds of the beet to the Mount Gambier Branch in June 1894, but again M was not mentioned as the supplier to the Bureau ('Agricultural Bureau of South Australia', Border watch (Mount Gambier), 13 June 1894, p. 2). There is no direct reference to M suppling seeds of these sugar beet to the Bureau but at its meeting of 8 January 1894, the Bureau reported having received 'thirty-five varieties of seeds' from him ('Central Agricultural Bureau', Advertiser (Adelaide), 11 January 1894, p. 6). M is known to have distributed these seeds widely within Victoria at the end of 1893 (see M to T. Easton, 16 November 1893 (In this edition as 93-11-16b) and notes thereto). Assuming that beet seeds were included in the 35 varieties of seed received by the Bureau, the consignment is dated to December 1893 as the latest it could have been sent.
