[Mr Sydenham, thistle inspector, reported that fair progress was being made in cutting the ordinary thistles, and most places where they had been forward they were now receiving attention. During the month he forwarded specimens to the Government botanist of three kinds of thistles.1 His doubts had been raised as to whether the one known locally as the "Star," and which had become such a pest in the northern portion of the shire, were correctly described. His doubts were confirmed by the official report, which classified it as the "Shore Thistle." The other kinds which were comparatively rare, were the safron thistle, which grows in Kerr's lane leading to Wallace's crossing, and the Star thistle, of which he had only discovered three plants in the shire.]
