From Ferdinand von Mueller to the Australasian   23 Mar 1894

["Bowna." — The weed sent has been identified by Baron von Mueller, who says that a vast number of poisoning cases from this plant have occurred on pasture runs, chiefly of the interior districts.1 As this little herb is perennial and is never killed by drought, and is seeding freely, it is difficult to annihilate it. The best plan to subdue it would be to scarify the ground, and sow on the broken up soil the seeds of the best grasses and fodder herbs suited to the region, particularly, also, the most valuable of the local native pasture-plants, by which means the feeding capabilities of the locality will also be enhanced.]

The plant's name is not given in the report.

Letter not found. The text given here is from 'The Yeoman. Answers to correspondents', Australasian (Melbourne), 31 March 1894, p. 537. Assuming that the reply would be published in the next available issue in this weekly newspaper, it is dated to 23 March 1894 as the likely earliest date it would have been sent.
