From Ferdinand von Mueller to Jessie Hussey   15 Aug 1894

249. Xerotes effusa, Lindley

247. Xerotes

This wants further study in its staminate and pistillate state and in its ripe fruit. Kindly note flowering time, soil, fragrance etc. also. You will probably find 9 species of Xerotes there.

Without number Xerotes juncea F.v.M.1

Of this white flowering very fragrant species, somewhat allied to X. Leucocephala, it would be very desirable to get seeds for pot-plants in European bot Gardens, but seeds would only grow where staminate and pistillate flowers flowered closely together.

265. Lithospermum arvense L.

Minute form.

264. Haloragis elata, Cunningham

262. Wurmbea dioica F.v.M.

& 261.

259. Erodium cicutarium, L'Heritier

260. Brachycome hyalosperma F.v.M.2

& 258.? fruit not ripe

253. Opercuria3 varia J. Hooker

& 257.4

256. Acacia acinacea, Lindley

or a closely allied species. Fruit (ripe) also needed

254. Vittadinia australis, Richard

255. Pultenaea tenuifolia, R. Brown5

251. Daviesia ulicina, Smith

With regardful greeting your

There are two entries without number for Lomandra juncea, of which Zerotes juncea is a synonym, at MEL are dated 1893 and July 1894 (AVH, accessed 4 August 1894; APC, accessed 19 August 2024).

Name not found in APNI or IPNI (accessed 19 August 2024); it may have been an herbarium name for another member of the genus.

Opercularia?

Neither of the record numbers 253 and 257 is used for a Hussey specimen at MEL.

The record number is used twice in the Hussey collection at MEL: Pultenaea tenuifolia, dated 1894, and the alga Dasyclonium incisum, undated.

Item is a typescript, transcriber unknown, prepared ca. 1977 from an original MS in the State Library of South Australia, Adelaide.

M's names match, or are synonyms of, the MEL entries, except for number 260, where the match is to genus.
