From Ferdinand von Mueller to Henry H. Edwards   [Oct 1894]

There are two species of zamia in Western Australia — the Zamia fraseri1 (also known as Encephalartos fraseri, and as Macrozamia fraseri and Macrozamia preissii); Preissii);2 that species is peculiar to W. A., but restricted to the extra tropical portion of your territory. It was named after the naturalist who accompanied Admiral Stirling on his voyage from Sydney to W. A.3 The other species of W. A. zamia — namely, Zamia dyeri, is rare; it seems to be limited to the coast country near Israelite Bay.

Edwards (1894), p. 233, where it was introduced: ‘I am very much indebted to Baron Ferd. von Mueller for the following information in regard to Western Australian zamias’. M’s letter is dated to October 1894 as the latest likely date it could have been sent to reach Edwards in time for him to quote from it in his report.
