From Jessie Hussey to Ferdinand von Mueller   20 Feb 1895

To Baron Sir. F. Von Mueller

Melbourne

My Lord

I have to thank you for your kind letter of the 13th inst,1 with your lithographed portrait which I feel honoured to posses2 — You sent me a splendid photograph of yourself in June 1893 (it came on my birthday) I greatly value these, and all other offerings I receive from you —

I regret being unable to send well developed fruiting specimens of the Pimelea 321 I had no opportunity of visiting the locality where it grows between the middle of Dec, and last Monday, when I went in search of it, but could not see one plant holding fruit. I will search further if possible — The seeds of this Pimelea which I send in the parcel today, were taken from plants gathered in the middle of Dec — I also send two or three specimens gathered at the same time, which I think are bearing a few fruit3

With kind regards

I am yours truly

Jessie. L. Hussey

Kraehenbuehl, note 19, describes this as 'the standard lithogram (resplendent with medals) that Mueller usually sent to his botanical collectors'. The basis of this identification is not given, and it has not been confirmed.

SA.

MS found with a specimen of Pimelea phylicoides (MEL 55868), with M’s specimen label ‘Pimelea curvifolia R.Br. var.’. See also J. Hussey to M, 2 December 1894, and J. Hussey to M, 3 January 1895. The specimen at MEL is dated February 1895, evidently based on this letter. However, the letter indicates that the specimens that came with the letter were collected in December 1894.

The letter is published in Kraehenbuehl 1981a), p. 396, where however It differs in punctuation, corrects apparent spelling errors, and the valediction omits 'With kind regards'.
