To Jean Müller1    4 March 1895

Because I am now entering into the 8th decade of my life, highly esteemed friend, I must hasten to conclude the larger literary works and so then in 1896 the third Census of Australian plants should be published.2 This time I would like to include the Evasculares as well and so I would like to ask you to provide the lichens. I am requesting Agardh for the algae and Brotherus for the mosses.3

Because the 1st and 2nd Census4 is available to you in Geneva, you will see that in conformity with it only the name, the author, his work and some other general work should be cited, then indication of the Australian colonies and other parts of the world. The work would hence contain neither synonyms nor varieties, and should hence be neither a difficult nor boring one. Can your incomparable mastery be won over to it? Your part could certainly be printed at first in Europe and then merged in my third Census.

Respectfully your

Ferd. von Mueller

MS annotation by Müller: 'resp. Ja in nächste Jahr nach Publ. meines Consp[od] 8-10 Mon. später, falls Wilson seine Sachen schickt' [replied yes next year after publication of my Conspectus or 8-10 months later if Wilson sends his things]. Letter not found. Presumably the work to which Müller refers was not his Conspectus systematicus lichenum Novae Zelandiae (1894), but a new work that he failed to complete before his death in 1896; 'Wilson' is probably the lichenologist F. R. M. Wilson (1832-1903).
This work was never published.
