From Ferdinand von Mueller to Alexander Supan   17 June 1895

I was very pleased, highly esteemed Professor, to receive the splendid map that the Herr Hofrath so liberally sent me.2 I ask you to express my best thanks to that excellent gentleman.

Very soon I will have something to offer as a return gift, namely Captain Kristensen's map of his voyage to Victoria Land during the last southern summer,3 and the 9th edition in the English language of the Select plants,4 further enlarged. The work should be particularly interesting to your institution, because with each species the natural distribution is cited as far as we know it to the present; but in addition, because in this book for the first time the most prominent useful plants of the earth (with exception of those of the lowlands in the equatorial zone) are geographically arranged. This has been done absolutely for the first time in this work, so that the public attention might be directed to it by your fine Mittheilungen.5

I sometimes hear very affably of the Darmstadt court through General Westmueller.6
