From Ferdinand von Mueller to Jessie Hussey   [Sep 1895]

The fringed Grasslily is a Thysanotus, but as your young Ladyfriend did not paint either leaves or roots or separate stamens or fruit, it is impossible to say with certainty, what species of Thysanotus it is. You will likely find many more Orchids there yet, also more kinds of minute plants.

Excuse briefness, as I am overwhelmed with Office work.

Ever regardfully your

Ferd. von Mueller.

I will tell you about the remaining Pterostylis in the present lot after a day or two.

Pterostylis

Thysanotus

Item is a typescript, transcriber unknown, ca. 1977 from an original MS in the State Library of South Australia, Adelaide.

J. Hussey to M, 25 September 1895 (in this edition as 95-09-25a) reports that she had collected in 'the hills and gullies near Port Elliot … tubers of the orchid no 427 (Pterostylis not yet determined) I will send these tubers to you in moss in a day or two'. Her letter appears to be in response to M to J. Hussey, September 1895 (in this edition as 95-09-00f) that includes Pterostylis barbarta as record number 428, but no number 427. That record number is used in MEL 1561549 for Pterostylis pedunculata, dated 1895, from 'Hills near Port Elliot'. This letter is therefore dated to before 25 September 1895, following 95-09-00f, around the same time as M to J. Hussey, September 1895 (in this edition as 95-09-00g). No further reference has been found to the painter of the Thysanotus.
