From Ferdinand von Mueller to the Leader   [Oct 1895]1

The sprig sent from St. Arnaud2 is from the British white poplar (Populus alba), which occurs with some variability as regards the intenseness of its white vestiture and the degree of indentation of the leaves. The tree reaches from Britain to Sweden, Siberia, the Himalayan Mountains, and the countries at the Mediterranean Sea. I planted it near Melbourne in the 50th year of this century; it is an excellent tree for summer shade, easily grown, of attractive coloration, and easily propagated from cuttings.
