From Ferdinand von Mueller to the Australasian   10 Jan 1896

["Eureka" (Coleraine).—The herb you send has been identified by Baron von Mueller, who says it is the sneeze weed, Myriogyne Cunninghamia1 (or Centipeda Cunninghamia2). It is not a wholesome herb for pastures, and herds and flocks avoid it. As it grows only on humid ground it can to some extent be annihilated by drainage. A kind of snuff can be prepared from this and another herb similar to it which are indigenous to this country, and both might serve as insecticides.]3

Centipeda Cunninghamia

Myriogyne Cunninghamia

Typesetter or editor error for? Myriogyne Cunninghami?

Typesetter or editor error for Centipeda Cunninghami? M used that spelling in his entry in B74.03.01, p. 143, where he gave Myriogyne Cunninghami as a synonym.

In M to the Australasian, 9 February 1894 (in this edition as 94-05-09a), M had previously identified a specimen of another species of Centipeda as 'sneeze-weed', a common name applied to the genus as a whole in Black (1943-57), vol. 4, p. 882.

Letter not found. The text given here is from 'The Yeoman. Answers to correspondents', Australasian (Melbourne), 18 January 1896, p.101. Assuming that the reply would be published in the next available issue in this weekly newspaper, it is dated to 10 January 1896 as the likely earliest date it would have been sent. There is another note from M in the same column; they are treated as separate communications in this edition as they may have been sent to him as soon as specimens arrived, then dealt with as individual replies.
