From Ferdinand von Mueller to Phillip Doran   [Mar 1896]

[The Curator reported that Baron von Mueller had kindly sent 21 species of South African bulbs, several of them being new to botanists.1]

No other mention of M's distributing South African bulbs has been found in the surviving correspondence. The next issue of the newspaper (6 April, p.2, col. c) carried another mention of the receipt of the bulbs, concluding:

This acquisition to the rarities in the garden will be much appreciated, and adds still further to the previous gifts of Baron von Mueller, consisting of seeds from Egypt, Madagascar, and South Africa, besides the trees he supplied at various times. Mr Doran has been favoured by being the medium for receiving the products, and he will much regret when the time arrives for the donor's retirement from the public service.

To be included in the report of the Curator of the Castlemaine Botanic Garden, the consignment is likely to have been sent in late March and is dated accordingly.
