To William Thiselton-Dyer   3 March 1896

3/[3]/951

After sending off the small lot of Papuan ferns to you, dear Dr Dyer, an other box arrived, and 26 more could be despatched. Then a third box came from Mr Fitzgerald out of which I could muster about 50 specimens of fungs, but not representing so many species. Altho’ I saw nothing striking among them, yet they represent partly species, not yet recorded from New Guinea; so I have sent them off also. Kew - as you are aware - is always getting full credit for special aid kindly afforded.

Mr Fitzgeralds travels are on private expense, to which I contribute largely, myself and near friends.

With best regards

your Ferd von Mueller.

2 altered to3. Date stamped Royal Gardens Kew 4. APR. 96.

M’s year is mistaken. As well as the evidence of the annotations and date stamp, the reference to the small lot of ferns is consistent with M to W. Thiselton-Dyer, 24 February 1896.

Annotated in black ink by John Baker: Selaginella candescens packet of 40 fungi names sent herewith JGB 17/4/96 and in red ink by William Hemsley: Ackd. & List sent 17.4.96 ( neither letter nor list found ).
