From Ferdinand von Mueller to Georg Schweinfurth   25 June 1896

For a long time, honoured Professor, I was eager to take up our correspondence again.3 Your longish absence from Egypt almost brought you out of my sphere and our activity in the profession indeed claims our time so much that without particular reason we can probably scarcely approach one another.

However, now there is a cause to write to you, since I should like to draw on the rich sources of your knowledge and practical experience, especially since our mourned friend Sickenberger has now also gone, and now for information from there I should like to turn to you. The work Select plants for industrial culture and naturalisation has been published in a new edition in the English language, and a copy of the latter will have come in to you in the Institute of Egypt to which I have the honour to belong.4 Of course I attempt to make this book each time it is newly published as complete as possible at the time. Since now the 10th edition will probably appear as early as 1897, I should like to ask you very sincerely to give me some additional items that would appear under your esteemed name.5

Whenever one uses Boissier's large work on the flora of the Orient, the thought arises that of the astonishing number of species, many are yet to be brought into many cultures of the world. Thus he gives for example 72 species of Vicia, of which undoubtedly many deserve naturalization or even cultivation.6 I certainly do not yet have all Trifolium species of high value in the Select plants, and in my herbarium, comprising almost a million folders brought together since 1839, so many of the species that are not yet brought into cultivation look very inviting. I should particularly like to ask you how the camels behave in reference to Trichodesma. Here the introduced dromedaries are very voracious after T. zeilanicum.7

Then on the other hand I could also be useful to you. Thus the Australian salt bushes of the desert should also prove themselves in the far regions in your place as highly important for stock-raising. The successes that Professor Hilgard with Atriplex semibaccatum, which he received from me together with several other species, have […] on the correction but now […] "Alkali lands" in California and the adjoining states as truly wonderful […]8

Undoubtedly I could still be very useful even to the ancient land through such introductions. Then our rapidly-growing tan-bark acacias are to be reported and undoubtedly still many other eucalypts will thrive in your place as many things now have.

I do not even know how such eucalypts as are already introduced develop there, at various elevations and changed soil conditions. Hoping that the autumn of your life is a very glorious one
