From Ferdinand von Mueller to Jessie Hussey   23 Sep 1896

23/9/96

On dissection I find, dear Miss Hussey, that 563 is Carex paniculata, Linné.

565 is also a Carex, but is far too young to make it out.

Regardfully your

Ferd. von Mueller

562 has no flowers but a fungus growth1

All but postscript published in Kraehenbuehl (1981a), p. 393, but with 'Respectfully' instead of 'Regardfully'.

Item is a typescript, transcriber unknown, prepared ca. 1977 from an original MS in the State Library of South Australia, Adelaide.

The record numbers commented upon were included in a determination list M to J. Hussey, September 1896 (in this edition as 96-09-00i). Other specimens collected in September 1896 (were not determined before M died.

M began to feel unwell in early September, mentioning his 'indisposition' in M to A. Sicha, 7 September 1896 and later correspondents. No letters from M dated October 1896 have been found. M was very unwell before he died; his Vic death certificate (15261/1896) states that his final illness lasted 16 days before his death of 'Apoplexia. Cerebri Sanguinea' ('Apoplexy, brain blood', i.e. 'stroke') on 10 October 1896. The four known letters from M written on or after 24 September 1896 are explicitly said to have been dictated.
