From Wilhelm Sonder to Eduard Fenzl   27 December 1852

Hamburg d. 27 Dec. 52

Mein werthester Freund,

So. z.

[…]

Mit herzlichen Grussen

Ihr

W. Sonder

Hamburg, 27 December 1852

My most esteemed Friend,

With the recently arrived consignment of plants from Australia, I also received a packet of seeds. I have divided the one coming to me into two parts; one half is destined for the local botanical garden, the other for the Vienna botanical garden. There are many pretty things in them. Even if only a part of them comes up, you will still have several new things for your garden, provided that you set some store on exotic plants.

The Hamburgers are all dyed-in-the-wool merchants, they do nothing otherwise, and therefore I will also claim your favour for the enclosed seeds. Recently I have been occupied with the closer determination of the Mueller plants, and especially with the composites, I would now like to have for comparison some of the composites described by Bentham in the Enumeratio plantarum Hügel 2and that comprises my request for today. The list of them is below. You shall have everything back soon. You are surprised perhaps that I ask for those that friend Steetz has already had, however he has not noted several essential things. So for example he has pronounced the Preiss Eurybia rudis as identical with that of Bentham. Now Bentham says his plants have a pappus uniserialis, but the Preiss one has a pappus biserialis with short outer row. Mueller has collected a similar species with a pappus uniserialis, now to what does it belong? […]3

I hope that you have received my consignments in good condition. Mueller has sent splendid plants, especially from Port Lincoln and from the interior, beautifully dried and completely collected, also a new Tetragonia, splendid Cassia, Acacia, tree-like Gyrostemons, but especially pretty composites. Have you not inclination and time to do some work on them? Or should there be anyone else in Vienna who is willing to work on some families, I shall then send my herbarium collection and gladly give away, where anything is to be given away. I shall approach Bentham regarding the acacias and the remaining legumes. Lindley will get the orchids. However, I cannot use people like Steudel.

With hearty greetings
