From Johannes Lehmann to Christian Nees von Esenbeck   27 Apr 1857

Esteemed President,2

Among the younger botanists, Dr Ferdinand Mueller of Melbourne, born in Holstein,3 has distinguished himself to advantage in the last few years, as you will have seen from the interesting reports in Hooker's Journal of Botany on his journeys and discoveries in New Holland. Of Mueller's writings, I have only the enclosed series myself, but even these and Hooker's reports will I think be sufficient to support my request to admit Dr Mueller among the members of our Academy and to send me the diploma for transmission. I would like to suggest the names Labillardière or Lechenault4 for Mueller and if these should already be assigned, the name of another traveller, who has collected in the region there.

The remainder of the letter includes a nomination of Dr Ludwig Pappe of Hamburg and comments on a paper by Dr J. Milde in Botanische Zeitung, vol. 15 (1857).

Nees von Esenbeck was President of the Academia Caesarea Leopoldino-Carolina Naturae Curiosorum (the Leopoldina).

M was in fact born in Rostock, Mecklenberg. He moved with his family to Tönning, in Schleswig-Holstein, when he was 10 years old, following the death of his father.

i.e. Leschenault. When M was elected, however, on 1 May 1857, the cognomen assigned to him followed Lehmann's spelling (see Academia Caesarea Leopoldino-Carolina Naturae Curiosorum to M, 1 May 1857).
