Mein werther Herr!

Ich habe Ihren Brief von 14 Oct. nicht früher beantworten können, da ich von Hamburg abwesend war. Ich freue mich recht sehr, dass Sie die Flora v Australien beginnen wollen, ich fürchtete, dass die Genera plantarum, welche Sie mit Dr Hooker gemeinschaftlich bearbeiten, Sie von der australischen Flora abziehen möchten.

Da es mein Princip ist, mein Herbarium für die Wissenschaft so nützlich als möglich zu machen, so wird es mir auch ein Vergnügen sein, Ihnen Beiträge zu Ihrer Arbeit zu liefern, so viel in meiner Kräften steht. Ich würde Ihnen sogleich die Thalamiflorae etc incl Rhamnea[e,] Terebinthaceae etc gesandt haben, wenn ich es nicht für zweckmässig hielte, Sie vorher zu fragen, ob Sie nur allein die Plantae Preissianae haben wollen. Mein Herbarium australasianum ist separirt und schliesst die Pflanzen von Priess, Sieber & Müller ein. Wollen Sie also nur die Pflanzen von Preiss haben, so muss ich diese aussuchen. Ich besitze eine schöne Sammlung von Preiss, doch fehlen mir aus verschiedenen Familien die Arten, welche nur als unica vorhanden waren. Von den Rhamneae und vielen anderen Familien wird mir aber nichts fehlen. Das Lehmannsche Herbarium, das aber auch nicht ganz complet war, ist verkauft, die von den Autoren zurückgesandten Exemplare waren auch oft nur Fragmenta . Meine Sammlung von Sieber ist complet; die von Dr F. Müller enthält die vollständige Collection der Pflanzen von Adelaide etc, überhaupt die ersten Zusendungen mit Inbegriff der Pflanzen von Dr Behr, Oswald etc. In den letzten 3 Jahren habe ich lange nicht alles erhalten, was Dr Müller gesammelt hat.

Wollen Sie mir jetzt schreiben, ob Sie das Ganze , oder nur die plant Preiss. allein haben wollen, so will ich Ihren Wunsch sogleich befriedigen.

Ich bitte Sie, Herrn Dr Hooker zu sagen, dass ich das Exemplar von Plokiostigma , nach welchem Schuchardt seine phantasiereiche Beschreibung gemacht, mitsenden werde. Das Genus hat nach meiner Meinung keinen Werth, und ich glaube, dass Sie die species von Stackhousia ebenfalls werden reduciren müssen.

Most worthy Sir,

I have not been able to answer your letter of 14 October earlier as I was away from Hamburg. I am very pleased that you intend to begin the Flora of Australia.¹ I was afraid that the Genera plantarum that you are working on conjointly with Dr Hooker² might keep you from the Australian flora.

As it is my principle to make my herbarium as useful for science as possible, it would also be my pleasure to supply you with contributions for your work as much as as I can. I would have sent you the Thalamiflorae, including Rhamneae, Terebinthaceae &c immediately, if I did not regard it as appropriate to ask you beforehand whether you wanted the Plantae Preissianae alone.³ My Hebarium australasianum is separate and includes the plants of Preiss, Sieber & Mueller. Therefore if you wish to have only the plants of Preiss, I must select them out. I have a fine collection from Preiss, but lack the species from various families that only occurred as unica. Of the Rhamneae and many other families there are none missing. Lehmann's Herbarium, however, which was also not quite complete, in which the specimens sent back by the authors were also often only fragments,⁴ is sold. My collection of Sieber is complete. That from Dr F. Mueller contains the complete collection of plants of Adelaide &c., generally the first consignments including the plants of Dr Behr, Oswald &c. In the last three years I have for a long time not received everything that Dr Mueller has collected.

If you would now write whether you want the whole or only the plant. Preiss. alone, I will satisfy your wish immediately.

I ask you to tell Dr Hooker that I will send the specimen of Plokiostigma after which Schuchardt made his fanciful description.⁵ According to my opinion the genus has no value and I think that you will have to reduce the species of Stackhousia as well.
