Lieber Vater!

[…]1

Dear Father!

[…]3

So far I am still quite well, but I have decided to accept a position with Dr Mueller in Melbourne in about a month. Although gold digging is a very pleasant occupation, even if a difficult one, that pleases me quite well for the present, yet I am not getting much further on with it, because unfortunately I must say that I, like all other gold seekers, have been too wasteful. Admittedly at the start in Melbourne I will not earn so much (6 shillings or 2 reichtalers per day with free housing and firewood, but must cater for myself). However, as it is a government appointment, I have the prospect to improve myself, if only the way of life will suit me after the free independent life on the gold fields. Besides some gold at home, I have now 150 pounds in the bank, even if not so much as it should have been, many a one has indeed saved less.
