My dear Will

If you had not already sent in ‘an application’ for the Tramway Management at Southampton, I hope you will do so. A testimonial carefully worded from your friend & boss at Manchester ought to do, & give you a fair ‘chance.

And there may not be so many applicants who are Electrical Engineers, as is shown by their saying they will take one who is only a Tramway Manager, if they can’t get [2] the real article. It is so nice a position that it is worth trying for. If you are sending in let me know by return & I will write to Carter to see if he can do anything, indirectly, — or I will write to Kent if you give me his address, as he may very likely know a lot of the chief men at Southampton.

However, anyhow try your luck!
