Letter (WCP1298.1077)

[1]

Frith Hill, Godalming

Dec. 12th. 1887

My dear Fanny

I return John’s letter, which is truly very sensible. As soon as you get a letter from Mr. Sully & send it to me I will write to him, as we shall all require a sworn affidavit to be of any use. I have the burial card & the will. The letter was not proved, I suppose, as there was no property. How did Mrs. Webster live after her husband's death? Can you tell me the year they moved to Albany Street, what was the No. (was it 50?) & did he die there. Please send me Mrs. Clubsow’s[?] address, as she can probably [2] prove by continuous letters from Mary, that she is now alive and is the actual Mary Webster who married John Wallace. This is the important thing to prove & they will not accept your proof or mine. Mr. Burrows probably knows nothing except the wedding & I have sent for a certificate of that.

I well remember Sully, John's fellow apprentice, a lively little fellow about John's age or a year or two younger. Did you know him at Clapham? I wonder you never metioned [3] him. I have now a power of attorney & affidavit from John & Mary. It seems she was married in 1855, and the widow of Laweld Webster died also in 1855. So, almost immediately after she went to California she became entitled to this property, yet neither her father or mother— though they knew of the will— took any trouble about it! It is annoying!

In haste | Your affectionate Brother | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]
