Alfred Russel Wallace F.G.S.

Dear Sir

In a recent meeting, the Directors of "The Spiritual Fraternity"1 of this city, made it my duty to correspond with you relative to your intended visit to the United States this Autumn. Consequently, I have the honor to present [2] for your consideration whither an invitation to lecture before our Society, during your sojourn in Boston, would be accepted and what conditions.

"The Spiritual Fraternity," though endowed with a magnificent temple2, dedicated last year, has comparatively few members, and is, therefore, at present, no wealthy corporation. In fact, the magnificence of one man3, aided by a few, has hitherto permitted the society to [3] open its meetings free for all as the expense of services and lectures ever to be held in 'The First Spiritual Temple,' can not be covered by any paid admission. The Society has lent and will always lend, any reasonable effort to secure the best interpretation of the Philosophy to which true Spiritualism is devoted. It will heartily greet you as an enlightened and fearless advocate of a much opposed but all important truth.

Entertaining the [4] hope that our fellow citizens have the opportunity of profiting by your instructive thoughts upon this subject while among us, this Society requests me to send you Fraternal greeting and anticipates the favor of your reply.

Very respectfully yours | HG Petersen [signature] | Secretary.

"The Spiritual Fraternity" is a Christian organization that was founded in 1883. It is located in Boston, Massachusetts and has its own "Articles of Faith."
The temple referred to here is the "First Spiritual Temple" which is the building that served as the headquarters for "The Spiritual Fraternity." It was dedicated and consecrated on September 26th-28th in 1885.
The man referenced here is most likely Marcellus Seth Ayers (1839-1921), the founder and key initial benefactor of "The Spiritual Fraternity."
