To. C. C.2 January 11th 1901.

Through crumbling cottage walls admit the rain,

The landlord still exacts his meed of gain.

France's fair capital was walled in vain.

In friendly strife upon the table green

The mighty ace o'erthrows both king and queen,

And all the numbers that lie ranged between.

But he whose name your cryptic verse reveals

Blushes to find what flattery it conceals.

Flattery too vast! Yet all your friendship feels.
