Dec. 1. [18]73

To the Secretary

Zoological Soc[iety]

Sir,

As I have not heard any thing to the contrary, I am to presume that Mr A. R. Wallace is still a member of the Society. And [2] you are doubtless aware that he is still, at the end of gibes allowing himself to be posted as a cheat and a swindler. Though he has been assured that all further exposure [3] should cease if he could only find two men of undoubted honor to justify his conduct & exonerate him from the charges brought ag[ain]st him. That none just his hired attornies will [4] dare utter a word in his behalf!!

Y[ou]rs [truly] | John Hampden [signature]
